This coffee comes from the African Plantation near the town of Moshi in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. African Plantation coffee placed 5th at the Tanzania Taste of Harvest 2013-14 competition. The estate cultivates 460 hectares of coffee at an altitude of 1,350 meters above sea level and includes Bourbon and Kent varietals. Similar to Kenya, coffee came with the French missionaries in the late 1800's, and was planted around Kilimanjaro. We are happy to finally get a Tanzanian coffee out on the shelves, and this one really shines as a dark roast. This cup opens up with a smokey note, reminding us of sitting around a campfire. It has a very subtle brightness, wrapped up in notes of sweet caramel. With its medium heavy body, you pick up on notes of roasted pine nuts, as well as notes reminding us of the way juniper smells. This savory coffee has a very creamy mouthfeel and finishes very smooth. Highly recommended on a cold morning!
